red white & blue s'mores

The Fourth of July is hands down one of my very favorite holidays. The parades, firework shows, BBQ, and all around love for 'Merica make it such a special time to celebrate. If your family is anything like ours, it's no celebration without lots of savory (and sweet!) food. I'm happy to skip the ribs and potato salad for a plate full of dessert any day. Bear and Zach want it all :).

(note: The s'mores pictured have been stacked on top of one another for photography purposes. We did not attempt to stuff this much food into our mouths at one time. Not that we'll admit to anyway.)

Bear & I were perusing around Target when we spotted these patriotic M&M's and of course they hopped right into our cart (along with a dozen other things we don't need). We then spotted rectangular marshmallows, and the idea for these red white & blue s'mores was born.

We also grabbed graham crackers, Hershey's bars, and white chocolate Candiquik (similar to almond bark).

To whip up these treats, start by melting the white chocolate and then dip each marshmallow into the chocolate. You only want to coat the top, so it's a very shallow dip.

Lay your marshmallows flat onto foil or wax paper and act quickly to lay on M&M's in a flag shape before the chocolate dries. We used two blue M&M's for the stars and either two or three rows of red M&M's for the stripes.

Once you've decorated as many marshmallows as you'd like, lay out the same number of graham crackers. Taking a spoon, drizzle remaining white chocolate over the top of the graham crackers in a diagonal motion.

We sprinkled the top with red sprinkles, but this is totally optional. According to Bear, everything tastes better with sprinkles.

Once all of the chocolate has dried, lay regular grahams (with no chocolate) onto a cookie sheet. Top each graham cracker with a flag marshmallow, and broil in the oven just until warm. Be careful with this step and keep a close eye on the marshmallows; it won't take long for them to heat and expand. If you leave them in too long, all of the chocolate will melt and the M&M's will run off.

Once out of the oven, add a square of Hershey's chocolate and top with a white chocolate drizzled graham cracker. Smush that bad boy together and enjoy!
