10 ways to help small businesses
I said just yesterday that despite all that’s going on in the world right now, I still want to keep this corner of the internet a positive place. And I plan to do so, but it’s hard to just completely ignore everything happening and talk strictly about fashion. It seems detached and insignificant, even if it is good for our mental health, to focus on lighter matters like shoes and floral tops. I think we can educate ourselves on what’s going on and do our part, while still “escaping” enough to stay sane. Life is all about balance, even in times like these.
That said, I think it’s so important to focus on something in particular right now: supporting small businesses. Everyone is worried currently, and everyone has a reason to be worried. But small business owners especially are hurting and will continue to do so, and it will help them tremendously if we all come together and make an effort to keep their businesses afloat. Sharing some ways we can help out below, even if finances are a strain right now. We’re all in this together!

Ways to Help Small Businesses:
1. Buy gift cards. Maybe there’s nothing you need from a store or restaurant right now, but it doesn’t hurt to stock up on gift cards. You can always give them as birthday or Christmas presents later.
2. Write good reviews. This is free and easy!! In this day in age, businesses rely heavily on positive online reviews. Whether it’s Facebook, Yelp, OpenTable, Google, Trip Advisor, etc…. there are endless places to leave a positive review for a business you love.
3. Tip. Now more than ever, tipping is so important. The local pizza delivery guy may not have a job in two weeks and your tip could help him pay his rent. You never know someone’s current situation, and times are hard.
4. Send 5 small businesses a caring message. It may seem like a small thing, but it would make someone’s day to receive words of encouragement right now. Just knowing you how much see and appreciate them will encourage them to keep going during this stressful time. Remind the photographer who shot your wedding how much you love your photos. Text your cleaning lady and tell her what an amazing job she always does. Spread love.
5. Share, repost, retweet. Maybe you can’t afford to support every small business you’d like to right now, but getting the word out ensures that someone else can. It’s a great time to give small businesses exposure and there’s no better way than by sharing and reposting their page on social media.
6. Reschedule, don’t cancel. Maybe you don’t feel comfortable keeping your bi-weekly nail appointment, but make a point to reschedule rather than cancel. We don’t know when any of this will end, but let small businesses know you plan to be back as soon as you can.
7. Ask how you can help. Every business is different and affected in their own way right now. Go straight to the source and ask what you can do to help them specifically. Just your thoughtfulness will go a long way.
8. Order online. A lot of boutiques, Etsy shops, etc. have the option to order online. Place those orders and pay for shipping.
9. Switch to local options. Y’all know I love my Starbucks, but I love local coffee shops just as much and they need our support right now. For those in our area of Houston- Momentum Coffee has the best lavender lattes and they have a drive-thru window. Maybe you love your weekly Panda Express fix. Order to-go from your local Chinese restaurant instead!
10. Get creative. I know we’re all navigating this weird time right now, but we can still make the most of it and find fun ways to do our part. Instead of your weekly date night to a movie theatre, order to-go from a local BBQ restaurant and have a date on the back patio. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn calligraphy. Sign up for an online class through a small biz and learn a new craft!
I really hope this post encourages us all to support small businesses during this time (and always!). They lean on us and it’s so important we do our part as much as we can. What are some of your favorite shops/boutiques/local restaurants? Please leave them in the comments & where you’re located!
