DIY distressed denim

Of all the trends currently circulating through the world of fashion, distressed denim seems to be at the top of that list. Everywhere you look, women and men are wearing ripped up jeans (gasp!) on purpose. My grandma would have a cow if she knew I tore up a pair of perfectly good jeans! Sorry, Mamaw. It's the style. And pretty sure it's not going anywhere.

Along with trends comes a hefty price tag; I've had such a hard time finding the perfect fit in destructed jeans, especially for a reasonable price. They're either way too baggy (not that I'm not into the whole boyfriend jean thing because I totally am) or they're too long or I don't like the wash, etc etc. You get the point. So when I found these jeans at Burlington Coat Factory the other day for $9.99 and they actually fit, I was pretty pumped. The one thing missing...I had hoped to find a pair with some holes. I'm crazy, right? But then I thought, rip these babies up yourself! If you butcher them (in a bad way), it's just ten bucks lost. So I took them home and got busy. Chances are you have an old pair in your closet that could use revamping, or even a thrift store pair of loose-fitted high waisted jeans would be perfect for this! All it takes is a couple supplies and a little time.

You'll need:
scissors
tweezers
chalk
pair of jeans

First, start by trying on your jeans and marking in chalk where you'd like to cut. Usually the knees are a good place to start. Also don't forget the back pockets! You can go as minimal or as crazy with this as you want, depending on how "holy" you'd like your jeans.

Now take scissors and cut several parallel lines 2-3 inches long. I cut 3-4 times with about an inch in between cuts.

Now comes the slightly time-consuming part. Taking your tweezers, pull out all of the blue threads from where you've cut (no white threads, only blue!). I found it easiest to do this after turning the jeans inside out.

Once you've pulled out all the blue strings, move on to your next cut until each spot looks nice and distressed. Give the jeans a run through the washing machine on cold, dry them, and they're ready to wear!
