Lately, I'm loving all things blush, tortoise shell, and tassel. The more fringe, the better! I pretty much need every one of these items to find their way into my closet.
I want to share a funny story with y'all that I couldn't get out of my head on the drive back to Houston yesterday. Back in 2010, I was an eager bride-to-be and couldn't wait to find the perfect dress. My best friend, Brittney ("Beanie"), had been in a wedding several years before and I adored the bride's dress. Beanie thought her friend might be interested in selling the dress, and to my bridezilla delight, she was (for a great price, to my Dad's delight). My Mom and I drove two hours to meet Brittney at the Lubbock mall to try on the dress; I just knew it was going to be "the one". We parked outside of Dillard's and I was so thrilled to see my Beanie for the first time in months. She went to the back of her truck to pull out the dress, MY dress, the wedding gown of my dreams. And when she came back around, my Mom and I exchanged knowing glances. This was going to be a really special moment. But what happened next did not fit correctly into my Say Yes to the Dress Moment. Beanie carried a giant toilet bowl box. You read that correctly; the dress was stuffed into a toilet box. Did you know they came in boxes? I didn't. Learn something new everyday.
So anyway, I wasn't going to give up hope just yet. Never judge a book by it's cover, right? So what if Beanie's friend transported her wedding gown around in a commode carrier? All that mattered was what was inside that very unattractive box. Now we were presented with a challenge: how to sneak a toilet, I mean wedding dress disguised as a toilet, into the Dillard's dressing room. Beanie carried the box and my Mom and I tried our best to play it cool; surprisingly no-one questioned us and we were soon in the clear. Beanie helped me into the dress, which was every bit as beautiful as I remembered, just not on me. I looked like a little girl trying on her mother's wedding dress. The fit, the style on my body, it was all wrong. But instead of caving in to my disappointment, Brittney and I started cracking up. If you know my Mom, you know that she gets tickled easily and then there's no stopping her. She and Beanie could not pull it together, they were laughing so hard they were crying at the whole situation. I danced around the dressing room, tripping over the dress hem and admiring my lovely bridal glow in the mirror.
A sales woman caught onto our fun, so we quickly shoved the dress back in the box and made a run for the car. We didn't find a dress that day, but we definitely made some memories. My Mom and I still laugh about the "toilet bowl wedding dress" experience, and it makes me miss my sweet Beanie who went to all that trouble just to help a friend. I also learned an important lesson that day: sometimes you can in fact judge a book by it's cover. Especially if the cover has a picture of a giant potty on it.
